HOW TO START RUNNING

In 2024 the Bridge to Brisbane was across all the socials and it’s easy to be motivated by the city alight with smiles and enthusiasm as runners hit checkpoints and personal bests. I’ve participated once before and as I watched the feed this year I instantly felt my interest spike – why not get out and get moving? –  but my body was telling me otherwise. One New Year’s Resolution later, I’ve committed to running so I can enter the Bridge to Brisbane in September 2025. So what does a novice like me need to know?

START SLOW

If you’re not a seasoned runner, and like me, starting basically from scratch, it’s a good idea to start slow. From the sources I’ve read, many suggest to start by walking and to build up slowly over time. Half hour walks are a great way to start, mixed with running to build endurance.

WEAR RUNNING SHOES

Having the right shoes softens the impact of the ground to your muscles and joints and will aid against fatigue. Spending some time picking your running shoes is important for finding the right support for your body.

STAY MOTIVATED

Build motivation by making habits, setting checkpoints and rewarding yourself. Build a playlist, find a rewarding activity or celebrate your latest personal record to create a positive experience.

SET GOALS

Parkruns, 5km Fun Runs and weekly challenges are great goals to train for and to keep you active for long periods of time. This year I’ve registered for Parkrun, a free, weekly 5km community running event.

KEEP TRACK

Keeping track of your runs is a great way to review your past efforts. Logging your routes and times and even taking photos of your running track helps you review your goals each week and sharing this with friends is a fabulous way to get social. I’m currently keeping track with Strava, however there are an array of apps out there, including Runkeeper by ASICS and Nike Run Club.
